Measuring a dachshund’s back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail

How to Measure Your Dachshund for a Winter Jacket

Hi again, it’s me — Leo 🐶

If you’re here, you’re probably trying to get your ween a proper winter jacket that doesn’t flap, squeeze, or ride up like a napkin.

Good news: I’m gonna show you exactly how to measure your dachshund for a coat — the right way, the ween way 🐾

Let’s do this!

What You’ll Need:

  • A flexible measuring tape (or a piece of string + ruler)
  • A treat (for cooperation, obviously)
  • One patient sausage dog

1. Measure the Back Length

From the base of the neck to the base of the tail

Place the tape at the spot where your dog’s neck meets the shoulders (not the head!), and measure straight down the spine to where the tail begins.
✨ This is the most important measurement for dachshunds — we’re long and proud!

2. Measure the Chest Girth

Around the widest part of the chest (usually behind the front legs)

Wrap the tape gently around the ribcage. Make sure it’s snug but not tight — we want cozy, not squishy.

3. Measure the Neck Girth

Around the base of the neck (where the collar sits)

This helps if the coat has a high collar or neckline. Again, not too tight — save the turtlenecks for humans.

My personal Tip:

If your dachshund is between sizes, go with the bigger one — more wiggle room = more tail wags. Plus, layering a hoodie or jumper underneath is always a stylish option.

Why Measuring Matters for Weens

Dachshunds aren’t like other dogs (obviously).
Our shape is unique — and most generic dog jackets don’t account for our long backs or deep chests. Measuring properly means:

  • No exposed bellies
  • No sliding jackets
  • No sad weens

Stay Tuned...

We’re working on jackets designed just for dachshunds, based on these exact measurements — so when you’re ready to shop, you’ll get that perfect fit from the start.

Let’s keep your pup warm, comfy, and fully covered this winter.
